Writing in The London Sunday Times, renowned hotel critic
Alistair Sawday chose Scott’s Townhouse Hotel as
one of his six favourite hideaways in the Med.
Well, that’s all fine and dandy, BUT …
Scott’s Hotel Isn’t For Everyone …
Are we for you? Take the quiz.
We’re not saying that in a snobby way. We mean quite literally that we’re not for everyone (no place is for everyone) and so just as you want what you want, we want people looking for what we’ve got.
Please note – some of these questions may seem facetious, but they are all based on experiences with actual guests.
- Do you mind if the people on the street outside the hotel speak Spanish? We are in a medieval wine village with almost no tourists. Guests cannot expect English everywhere outside. There are places on the island where that is the case and if that’s what you want you should go to those places. We’ll be happy to refer you to some nice hotels that happen to be in tourist areas.
- Do you mind pouring your own drinks in the bar? We like to make our drinks the way we like them, but one guest once told us she didn’t feel as though she were on holiday unless a bartender poured her drinks. We don’t have a bartender, so we ask you to make your own drinks and just sign for them in the honesty book.
- Do you mind living without TV for awhile? We have a TV in the bar for newshounds, and you may have one in your room if you ask in advance, but we generally consider ourselves to be a TV-free zone.
- Do you mind not having children around, and not bringing yours if they’re under twelve? Children are lovely – we’ve got a brace ourselves – but we find the younger ones don’t mix with good antiques, silk curtains or antique lace. They can be a tad noisy, too.
- Which brings us to the next query. Do you mind a quiet hotel? Some people want a lot of buzz - lots of activities, a houseparty atmosphere, maybe even a disco. That's not us. We're all about quiet relaxation, so please don't come here looking for nightlife. You'll have to drive 25 minutes to get to the major party zones on the island.
- Do you mind being inland? Our other hotel, the one in the mountains, has what everyone says are the best views of any hotel on Mallorca – a sweeping vista out over a bijou village and down a green valley to the sea in the distance. This hotel, however, our townhouse hotel, is convenient to everywhere on the island, but nobody could swoon over the views of the patio or even the church square. Authentic, yes – picturesque, perhaps, but stunning views? We’re afraid not.
- Is comfort important to you? We pride ourselves on our handmade beds, goosedown pillows and top quality all-cotton sheets, mostly by Ralph Lauren. But some people are out a lot, use their rooms sparingly, and really don’t care much about the creature comfort side of things.
- Speaking of which, would you like a late breakfast sometimes? We staff the breakfast room until noon. Many people are out and gone by 9 a.m. and never want a lie-in. We nevertheless offer it as an option, so it’s there for you if you want to use your holiday to get a rest.
- Do you mind being in an almost smoke-free zone? Guests who smoke are welcome, but we simply ask them to smoke in the bar, on the patios, but not in the bedrooms or breakfast room. That leaves most of the place for guests who don’t smoke.
If you answered most of these questions in the way in which it’s glaringly obvious we’d like to have you answer, then you’re likely to enjoy our townhouse refuge from the stress of life, a civilised haven of taste and comfort and values that seem to be becoming old-fashioned.

But now let’s refine the quiz just a little bit, this time in relation to our mountain place.
Are you a candidate for Scott's Galilea?
After only a short time in operation, we already rank No. 6 in popularity out of 971 hotels listed on Trip Advisor, the authoritative website that rates hotels according to the comments made by people who have actually stayed in those hotels.
That’s all well and good, but maybe we’re still not what you’re looking for.
Answer these few questions to find out if we’re for you, or whether you should look elsewhere.
- Do you consider yourself reasonably fit? Our Galilea place is built into a steep hillside and the price of the glorious views is that you have to go up and down a fair number of stone steps. No problem for most people, but it’s not a place for anyone who is troubled by a few flights of stairs.
- Do you mind peace and quiet? Seems like a dumb question, but some people come on holiday to hit the hotspots and get a taste of the roaring disco life. Believe me, Scott’s Galilea ain’t for you. Sometimes the loudest sound on your private terrace is the terrible racket made by a butterfly beating its wings close to a nearby flower, or the insupportable noise of your partner turning a page in a book (maybe one of mine, which are especially noisy).
- Do you like to walk, do you ride, enjoy eating well? You can do all those things pretty much right out the back gate. And if you like birds, you’re likely to see lots of them at some times of the year – more than a hundred different species during the migration seasons. Bucolic pleasures: not for everyone, heaven for some. But golf and sailing and scuba diving and beaches aren’t very far away, in case that’s how you get your relaxation.
- Are you afraid of heights or narrow winding mountain roads? We’re up a couple of thousand feet and the road up, though pretty, has a half dozen sharp hairpin turns and seems narrow in places if you meet a bus.
- Do you mind “natural” air conditioning? When we bought the place we went to install a/c but were told by a local that we’d be crazy (and wasteful) to do so. We’re 600 metres up, which means we’re always five degrees cooler than down on the beaches, and at the top of the valley there’s always a breeze on the private terraces. But if you like to stay inside with the a/c turned right down, then you want a coastal hotel (or even our townhouse hotel, where you can regulate your own temperature no matter what Ma Nature is doing outside).
- Do you like, or mind, cooking for yourself from time to time? We have full kitchens in all our accommodations, so you don’t always have to go out. Some seasons of the year we even serve meals, or offer a barbecue. But maybe you prefer room service, in which case we suggest one of those places down in the more heavily inhabited areas of the island.
